Report: Liverpool in talks to sign £50M star despite ongoing manager hunt

Liverpool have reportedly entered into talks with Marc Guehi's agents over a potential summer transfer switch to Anfield.

The Reds have yet to appoint a successor to Jurgen Klopp and although the general consensus is that Xabi Alonso will take the job, talks are ongoing.

Why are Liverpool investing into defensive signings?

Following a transformative summer focused on revamping the midfield, Liverpool's attention has shifted towards strengthening the defence.

Last season's challenges highlighted the need for depth and quality in the midfield, leading to the acquisition of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

For a total of around £140 million, these signings revitalised Liverpool's midfield, propelling them back into contention for major honours.

However, the defence, particularly the centre-back position, has emerged as a priority.

The reliance on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate raises concerns, especially given the latter has an unfortunate injury history.

Marc Guehi's acquisition could alleviate these concerns, providing a robust option alongside Liverpool's existing defensive talents.

According to a teamTALK report, Liverpool have made contact with Marc Guehi's representatives over a potential move to Merseyside in the summer transfer window.

A deal could cost the Reds £50 million but after long-term interest, the Reds have made their first formal move by sounding him out via his agents.

Guehi is under contract with Crystal Palace until 2026 which means the Eagles have no reason to cave into pressure to sell although it would mean he is a free-agent risk down the line.

Chelsea are also interested but they are reportedly making Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande their priority target.

Xabi Alonso talks ongoing

Liverpool, meanwhile, continue work on appointing a new manager with talks ongoing with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso.

A development on this front may need to wait, however, as the Reds are aware of the title race he is navigating in the Bundesliga and are keen to not come across as too overbearing.

Something Bayern Munich aren't bothered by.

But then again, stealing Leverkusen's manager and interrupting their title race in the process likely comes across as quite appealing for the Bavarians.
