Xabi Alonso Could Join Liverpool If Release Clause Is Triggered

Bayer Leverkusen have included a clause in Xabi Alonso's new contract that only one of his former clubs can activate.

This means Liverpool, along with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are able to hire the Spaniard by paying a premium to Leverkusen, according to Sky Sports.

The value of the exit clause has not been specified but Alonso could be an interesting potential replacement for Jurgen Klopp when his contract expires in 2026

However, with at least two and half years remaining on the German's spell with the Reds, there is no point speculating about Klopp's departure now.

Will Klopp renew his contract beyond 2026?

Klopp signed a contract extension in 2022, extending his terms another four years until 2026.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Klopp admitted that he pondered whether he was still the right fit for the job as Liverpool's manager.

He told LFCTV: “This one is different because of the length of time we have been together. I had to ask myself the question: Is it right for Liverpool that I stay longer?

“Along with my two assistant managers, Pep Lijnders and Pete Krawietz, we came to the conclusion it was a ‘Yes!’

Supporters are so grateful he did even if last season did not go as planned. The vast majority of fans want to see the 56-year-old sign another contract even if his deal only expires in over two years.

It's too early to tell if Klopp will eventually sign another contract but with Liverpool 2.0 showing encouraging signs, he may be tempted.
